Summer Reading - Books Are Fun!

School is coming to an end and summer is just beginning! What are your kids going to do for fun? Going on trips, swimming at the pool or beach, visiting theme parks, summer camp, or vacation bible school? Video games, social media, television? Anyone plan to read some good books???

Unfortunately, many kids associate reading with work, and not with fun! Yet, books are fun! They lead into wonderful worlds of adventure, open our minds to new ideas and places, and move our emotions. As the school year ends, and summer begins, don't forget to plan some reading time!

Try out some of these books for starters:

The lists above are just for ideas and suggestions...no way should you ever limit reading to just what is on the list. Always choose books that interest you!

One of my favorite books is Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. If your kids haven't read it, then I highly recommend it. My daughter introduced it to me when she came home from 5th grade...many moons ago. It is a book that will move you to tears.

I had my students make collages about the book after we read it in class. We went to magazines and cut out pictures that reminded us of the setting, the plot, the characters, etc. and glued them on construction paper. The kids loved doing this, and came up with some really interesting collages. I think this would be a fun activity to do after reading any book, and a great one for summer! Here are some of the pictures my kids made:

A good idea to motivate kids to read is to introduce the book and the background to get them hooked. Here is a PowerPoint to introduce the novel:

If you wish to teach Where the Read Fern Grows in your classroom next fall, I do have a unit available, as well.

Another fun activity to do after reading a good book is to make an ABC book or PowerPoint summarizing the book. FREEBIE:
