I Hope You All Had a Merry Christmas!

I haven't been able to post anything lately. Hectic times during the holiday, the flu, and a broken toe! Ouch! In any case, I hope that everyone had a wonderful and merry Christmas, and that you were able to spend time with friends and family. My husband and I had a quiet and joyous Christmas together with our two doggies.

I thought you might like to know this is available for sale in my TPT store.  If you go back to school right after the New Year, here is a fun followup to your Christmas Around the World unit, and a good way to start the first few days back from vacation.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We had our last day of school before the holiday yesterday, and I am so thankful for the time off! My husband still has to work, but we will get some time to spend together next weekend! Woohoo!

I was just going through ideas for fun things to do with kiddos over the holidays, and this picture I found on my phone caught my eye. I remember last year saving up bottle caps to recycle for some cause, but then the organization we were saving them for no longer collected them. So, we had lots of caps! Here is what a friend of mine did with them:

Photo: Kid art with bottle caps and glitter...
It was fun and entertaining for the kiddos, and I think I might extend this idea this year. I think they can be glued onto colored cardboard, and then the finished design cut out and placed on a plate stand. :)

Have fun this week everyone, and enjoy a great Thanksgiving!

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving!

So, one more week to go before Thanksgiving week! We get the whole week off, but I think some schools only get Thursday and Friday off. I am thankful for those extra days!

If you wish to have a little fun in the classroom this week, I have found that my students really love reader's theaters and acting out plays and skits. I guess a little drama is okay this time of year. My students love to read out the stories and interact with the text. Here are some ideas for you to keep your students active and engaged, and have some fun, too!

Product/Thanksgiving-Readers-Theater-Gobble-It-Up  A reader's theater that's fun with lots of different parts. On the first Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims and the Indians are coming together for a three day feast, and Mr. Turkey Lurkey has to take cover. There are 26 short speaking parts, so everyone can be involved! It takes approximately 20-25 minutes to be performed. No costumes necessary, but you can dress it up.
Thanksgiving Reader's Theater - Gobble It Up
Thanksgiving-Skit-A-Joyful-Harvest  A short Thanksgiving play that is quick and easy to perform, and fun! Set the day before the first Thanksgiving. Four characters - a pilgrim boy and girl, and a native American boy and girl. A fun way to act out the preparations for the first Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Skit - A Joyful Harvest
Thanksgiving-Hunting-Homophones-PowerPoint  This isn't a play, but a Thanksgiving short story read-aloud on slides. Students have to search each slide for two incorrect homophones! Students have fun, and learn revising skills, too!
Thanksgiving Hunting Homophones PowerPoint

Thanksgiving-Then-and-Now-Venn-Diagram-SmartBoard-Activity  Another interactive way to get kids up and involved is to use technology. If you have a Smart Board, then this is a fun activity to do around Thanksgiving. Students have to drag the foods that are common to our era and that are common to the Pilgrim's era into the Venn Diagram. Kids love to move the words around on the board.

Fun Fall Activities!

Are your kids going batty waiting for Halloween? I can't believe that the holiday season is upon us! This is a great time of year for doing fun activities with your kiddos, and kids just love getting involved in all the action.

I love making things with the little ones. How about making some cheesecloth ghosts? Take a two liter bottle (I use one that is full so it won't tip over)  and tape a balloon on top of it. Then lay a piece of cheesecloth over the top. Drape it the way you want that makes it look spooky, and spray with spray starch. Repeat until stiff. Finish by gluing on some black felt eyes!

Another fun activity is to make gourd pumpkins! Start with a dried gourd. Clean it out and paint it orange, and carve it like a pumpkin! Glue it on a plate decorated with fall leaves. Glue some straw and a leave to the top for decoration.

Here is a treat for you!! Another activity is to make clothespin bats! Click here to get a great FREEBIE! Clothespin bat template and directions on how to make clothes pin bats, with lots of batty activities included! Halloween-Clothespin-Bats-Craftivity-and-Bat-Activities-373054

October Events!

Well, I am breathing a sigh of relief! :) Today was my last day with students until next Tuesday! Tomorrow I have a work day, and I am looking forward to getting some things done in my room, as long as no more meetings spring up unexpectedly. I plan to get grades in, plan some lessons, put in copies, clean out my closet, organize my standards...yada yada yada. You know it will probably not get done, but I can dream.

Every month our school has a character word of the month, and students are nominated for an award based on being an exemplar of this character trait. One faculty or staff member is also awarded every month. Well, I was very surprised Monday when it was announced on the PA that I was selected as the faculty member of the month for the character word Honor/Honesty. Wow! What an honor! They came in and took my photo with my HR class, and gave me a $25 gift certificate to Longhorn Steakhouse, too! :)

We had a great Pink Out Day for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here I am with some of my homeroom students dressed in pink to support the cause.

(My mother passed away in 2008 from Breast cancer, and my sister and my cousin are survivors.)
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I have made a freebie for you! Stop by my TPT store and download your free Breast Cancer Awareness Bookmarks. :)
After my workday tomorrow, I am fortunate to be able to enjoy a four day weekend, compliments of Christopher Columbus! (Thanks, Chris.) For those of you who have to come up with plans for Columbus Day, or for the Friday before, I have a couple of things in my TPT store you might be able to use. Try out my Columbus Day PowerPoint for some nonfiction reading practice, or a Word Search and Fill in the Blank activity just for fun.
Red Ribbon Week is also Coming! Here are some free activities your school can do:
I also have a door decorating set for 2013 Red Ribbon Week available for sale in my TPT store.
Last of all, but not least of all, Halloween is creeping up on us. Some schools do not celebrate the holiday, but do celebrate with lots of fun Fall activities and festivals. However you celebrate, stop by my TPT store and click on either Halloween or Holidays tab for fun and educational activities to use in the classroom. There are too many for me to list here. :)

Fire Drills and Computer Crashes! :(

This week started out with my laptop computer crashing and although I had most of my data backed up in the cloud, I lost what I had worked on for three hours the night before. I went out and bought a new laptop, but now I have a learning curve with Windows 8. So, I have been getting behind on blog updates, product updates and creation, etc.
Thursday we had a fire drill. Although we are used to having monthly fire drills, teachers and students alike were grumbling a bit as we headed out the door. Why? Because after last week, when a possible electrical fire made us evacuate the building for hours (it turned out to be refridgerant leaking from an air conditioning unit), we did not like the possibility of another long and hot wait out in the midday sun when it's over 90 degrees!

Thankfully, it was not a real emergency, and we were allowed to go back in the building fairly quickly. However, it was a flaming hot emergency for me, for while I was taking roll out in the grass, I stepped in fire ants! Ouch! I have about twenty little blisters all over my feet. Note to self - slip on closed shoes for fire drills. Sandals just don't cut it!
Oh well, at least Friday the 13th turned out well for me. I stopped by Chic-fi-A on my way to school and ordered a biscuit and orange juice. When I pulled up to pay, they said it was on the house! Woo hoo!
I hope everyone had a good week and especially a good Friday the 13th!

Great Short Week and TPT Sale!

Hello Everyone!
It was a short week, but a productive one! After the three day weekend, my students worked on adjective and adverb clauses, and sentence structure. We also read the short story "Alll Summer in a Day" and discussed figurative language, along with tone and mood. We were able to compare the story to the move (available online), and then we used Chromebooks today to write. My students are starting to get comfortable using Google Docs, and I am excited about having them have use the new technology! They love it, too, and are so engaged. They don't even realize how much they are writing, and are suprised when they check their word count!

If you are interested in any of these activities, I have some products availabe in my TPT store that you might like.

Welcome Back to School! Two Freebies and a Great Teaching Moment!

Welcome back!!

Well, I can't believe that I am already in my 3rd week of school! I have been so busy getting back into the swing of things and getting to know my students! So far, this year is off to a good start! I am teaching two co-lab classes this year. and I have many more special needs students than I think I have ever had before, so it will be challenging. However, I have worked with my collaborating teacher previously several years ago, and we work well together and make a good team. I think it will really benefit the children.
I have made a few new activities this year to start off with, and I loved how well it went. My students really enjoyed the "What If..." poem and "Me" bag activity that we started the year off with. I also had them do an "I Am" Poem.

I had my students try to put a noun in the first line, such as "I am the pen that is mightier than the sword," developing metaphors with the ideas. My students, even my special needs children, had a great time with this. We also did this in conjunction with reading a nonfiction article about Malala Yousafzai, the girl who was shot by the Taliban. Many children of the world held up signs saying, "I am Malala." and we discussed how the pen can be mightier than the sword. Then we watched her speech to the U.N. It was a very powerful activity.

Here is the link to Malala's speech:

You Tube - Malala's UN Speech

Scholastic Scope magazine has a great article and activities in the September 2013 issue.

And here is a good article from the NY Times:

Both of these poetry activities are available to download for FREE in my TPT store!

I hope everyone has a great start to the new school year!

Happy Memorial Day and the Beginning of Summer!

Happy Memorial Day! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday, and hopefully some great food, too! We bought a new grill, since our old one bit the dust, and enjoyed some hot dogs and brats. I also hope everyone has taken time to honor those who made our freedom possible. Thank you to all who have served or are serving now.
Summer is here. Our classes are over, and soon most everyone will be on summer break. Don't forget to remind kids to read over the summer to avoid that summer "slide." I have some recommended reading lists you can print out if you don't have the time to make your own.

Have an enjoyable summer! I will still be posting from time to time as I  create new products and I will be giving several things away this summer in hopes of getting some feedback, so stay tuned!

All my best,

The Last Week of School and a CLASSIC Movie

Well, I am coming up on the last week of school. We go all week this week, and then have the kids for only Monday and Tuesday of the following week. So excited to see the end of the year, and although I will be glad to see some kids move on, I will shed some tears for some others.

This final week is very simple to plan for. We are finishing up our book Gifted Hands: the Ben Carson Story, and kids will be scrambling to get in any make-up work they owe me. We will go to the computer lab twice this week, and then on Friday, we are watching the movie version of the book with another class in the media center.

So, that leaves Monday and Tuesday...grades will be in, and all books will be turned in. Lockers will be cleaned out. What do we do?

Well, in years past I have found this is a great time to show my kids a real CLASSIC movie that will hold them spellbound. The movie I found...National Velvet, starring a very young Liz Taylor and Mickey Rooney. Most have never seen it,which is great so they won't be bored, and the movie actually begins with the children in a rural English one room school house letting out for summer. The story is about a girl named Velvet who makes her dream come true of entering her horse into the Grand National, a very intense and dangerous English Steeplechase. With very little explanation of the story, my students love every minute of this movie. When the big horse race comes up, they are cheering and on the edge of their seats! So, that will be our plan for the last two days of school!

Here is a link to a four minute view of the highlights, made in memory of Elizabeth Taylor. Enjoy this movie with your students if you can.

After Testing and Mother's Day!

Testing is over for our kiddos, and oh,what a relief it is! However, now my sweeties will think school is over, when in actuality we still have four more weeks to go. Ahhhh,. so how do I keep them engaged in learning when their mind is on summer vacation?
Well, it won't be easy. It never is. Thank goodness we started the new book Gifted Hands last week, and they are intrigued by Dr. Carson's life as a kid and his rise to success. I think I have piqued their interest, but I have got to slowly reel them in! So, tomorrow we will read Chapters 2 and 3, and then go to the computer lab for a little webquest on significant terms they will come across in the book. I think that will an engaging activity, because they so love to get on the internet and research questions.
The week will be interesting, because I will be out on Wednesday for professional training, and on Thursday the class will watch the Scholastic Book Fair video so we can start thinking about books that we might want to read this summer. I can't wait...and I will have to add some of the new titles to my summer reading list.
We will complete an activity for Mother's Day on Friday. I will be using my Proverbs...What Did Your Mother Tell You? PowerPoint. Mothers-Day-Proverbs-What-Did-Your-Mother-Tell-You-PowerPoint
We will make Mother's Day cards with acrostics made with Mom's first name and proverbs that begin with those letters.
