Christmas is what?

Hello again,

Christmas and holidays are over. Students will be rolling back to school, and they will probably not be very motivated. Teachers will be back as well, and hopefully, they will be more motivated than their students.

So, how do we get back the excitement of learning and kick off a wonderful new semester? I like to start afresh. I try to engage my students back into learning with brain teasers and engaging facts (as in my free Happy New Year handout as mentioned previously).

I usually make new seating assignments, introduce a new book, and change up a few routines. New bulletin boards and a new seating arrangement can liven things up.

Of course, State testing is beginning to loom on the horizon, but there are a few fun holidays to enjoy before we get there. Look for standards based activities that will go along with these, and the year will zip on by. Using themes is another good way to keep the kids engaged, especially when they can look forward to something after all the hoopla of Christmas. We can prepare for events like Winter, Martin Luther King Jr., Black History Month, Valentine's, St. Patrick's, Spring, and Easter. Before you know it, this year is going to be over!
